The Science

Calm Days has four active ingredients. Here's what each one does, why we included it, and what the research says.

L-Theanine

A compound found naturally in green tea. L-Theanine promotes alpha brain wave activity, the same pattern your brain produces during meditation or deep focus. The practical effect: less mental chatter, more clarity, without drowsiness.

A 2024 systematic review in BMC Psychiatry analysed 11 randomised controlled trials across six countries and found that L-Theanine supplementation significantly reduced psychiatric symptoms, particularly anxiety, across a range of conditions including generalised anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, and sleep disorders.

Earlier, a 2019 review in Pharmacological Research found that L-Theanine at daily doses of 200 to 400mg produced anxiolytic and anti-stress effects in both acute and chronic conditions, and was considered safe. ScienceDirect.

A 2019 randomised, placebo-controlled, crossover trial in Nutrients found that 200mg/day of L-Theanine for four weeks reduced scores on measures of depression, anxiety, and sleep quality compared to placebo. PubMed Central

Saffron Extract

Clinical research has shown that saffron extract supports mood by influencing serotonin and dopamine levels. It's one of the more well-studied natural ingredients for emotional balance, and the results are consistent enough that we made it a core part of the formula.

A 2021 randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in Frontiers in Nutrition found that participants who received saffron extract reported reduced depression scores and improved social relationships, along with increased resilience against stress-related responses. PubMed Central

A separate trial in 80 adults found that saffron extract (Affron) at 28mg/day for 4 weeks significantly improved anxiety symptoms. PubMed Central A 2025 study in Nutrients also confirmed beneficial effects on depressive and anxious symptoms, as well as improvements in sleep quality. MDPI

Magnesium Glycinate

Magnesium helps relax muscles and calm the nervous system. We use the glycinate form specifically because it absorbs well and doesn't cause the gut issues that cheaper forms like oxide can.

A 2017 systematic review in Nutrients covering 18 studies found that magnesium supplementation showed beneficial effects on subjective anxiety in anxiety-vulnerable populations. PubMed

A 2024 systematic review in Cureus concluded that supplemental magnesium is likely useful in treating mild anxiety and insomnia, particularly in those with low baseline magnesium status. PubMed Central

Vitamin B6

B6 is involved in producing serotonin and GABA, two neurotransmitters that regulate mood and stress response. Low B6 levels are linked to increased anxiety and irritability, so keeping them topped up gives the other ingredients more to work with.

A 2022 double-blind trial at the University of Reading, published in Human Psychopharmacology, found that B6 supplementation reduced self-reported anxiety among participants. Visual testing confirmed increased GABAergic inhibition, consistent with B6's known role in GABA synthesis. PubMed Central

Why These Four Together

The combination covers two angles. L-Theanine and magnesium-glycinate address the physical side: muscle tension, racing thoughts, nervous system activation.

Saffron and B6 work on the neurochemical side: mood, emotional steadiness, stress resilience.

They all also reinforce each other rather than overlapping, which is why we kept the formula to four ingredients.
